Texas Longhorns’ Air Force Transfer Target Rytis Petraitis Announces Decision

The Texas Longhorns initially focused on guards during their recruitment efforts in the transfer portal but still have gaps to fill in the frontcourt. Their search continues following the latest development on Sunday.

According to an announcement on his social media account, Air Force transfer Rytis Petraitis has committed to Cal, opting for the Golden Bears over Texas. Despite visiting the Forty Acres earlier this month, the Arlington, Texas native has chosen to take his talents out west rather than return to his home state.

During the past season, Petraitis showcased his versatility as he led Air Force in various statistical categories including points (15.7), rebounds (6.3), assists (3.7), blocks (0.9), and steals (1.6). His all-around contributions made him a key player for the Falcons, a fact not lost on the Longhorns’ coaching staff.

Despite finishing at the bottom of the Mountain West regular-season standings, Air Force secured notable victories, notably a surprising 90-58 triumph on the road against UNLV on Jan. 23. Petraitis played a pivotal role in this win, recording only the second triple-double in Air Force history with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists, along with three blocks and two steals, showcasing his dominance on the court.

While Texas and coach Rodney Terry were eager to add Petraitis to their roster, it appears that Cal may offer him a larger role.

Last season, the Golden Bears had connections to Austin and the Longhorns, with former Texas players Devin Askew and Jaylon Tyson joining Austin native Keonte Kennedy at Cal in 2023.
