Collingwood’s speedy player is reportedly attracting interest from rival clubs: AFL trade news

Rival clubs are reportedly showing interest in recent Collingwood debutant Joe Richards, who currently lacks a contract for 2025.

The mature-aged Magpies recruit made an immediate impact in his first AFL appearance on Sunday, recording 18 disposals, six tackles, and a goal in the reigning premiers’ 11-goal victory over West Coast.

Richards’ opportunity arose due to setbacks among Craig McRae’s attacking options, with Beau McCreery (concussion), Jamie Elliott (foot), and Lachie Schultz (suspension) all unavailable for Round 9.

Senior coach Craig McRae called upon Richards to fill the gap. The Wangaratta product, known for his speed and crafty play in the front half, had been excelling in the VFL at the start of 2024.

The 24-year-old is likely to retain his place in McRae’s side due to McCreery’s continued absence and the revelation of Elliott’s minor vascular issue.

However, Richards’ longer-term prospects are said to be attracting the interest of other clubs, according to News Corp.

His contract status, promise, and role at Collingwood could entice rivals to attempt to lure Richards from Olympic Park this season.

With clubs prioritizing speed in their roster builds, Richards could be highly sought after if he remains without a deal for 2025 and continues to demonstrate his worth at the top level.

The preference at Collingwood is likely to be for the quartet of McCreery, Elliott, Schultz, and Norm Smith Medal winner Bobby Hill, while youngster Harvey Harrison is beginning to shine in his third season in black and white.10 things: Joe Richards

Richards was selected by Collingwood in the 2022 National Draft as the 48th overall pick, emerging from the Ovens and Murray League as a promising mature-aged prospect.

The speedy half-forward played 14 games in the VFL last year during an injury-interrupted debut season and has scored 13 goals in his first six games at the state league level in 2024.

He’ll likely have another chance at the top level this weekend when Collingwood hosts Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday, with fellow over-age addition Lachie Sullivan also thriving in his first AFL opportunity.

Richards is among several Magpies players without contracts for 2025, including senior figures Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom, and Jeremy Howe.10 things: Joe Richards
