David Fifita ‘Circus’ Wreaks Havoc on Roosters; Disheartened Star Eyes Vacated $3.3M Contract

David Fifita made a dramatic late bid for the Australian athletics’ Olympics team with a spectacular backflip, reminiscent of Daly Cherry-Evans’ infamous snub of the Titans nine years ago. The powerhouse State of Origin forward reneged on a deal to join the Roosters on Wednesday, opting instead to remain with the Gold Coast Titans for another two years. This sudden reversal has left the Roosters furious, and rightfully so.

The Roosters had already taken steps with Sitili Tupouniua, reportedly giving him permission to negotiate for 2025 and beyond. Angus Crichton, feeling sidelined after the Roosters offered Fifita a lucrative deal, was also affected. The Roosters now face significant decisions and uncertainty, while Fifita stays with the Titans for 2025 and 2026.

### IS THE DOOR STILL OPEN FOR FIFITA AT BONDI?
Short answer: No, not in this lifetime. Roosters chairman Nick Politis, a powerful and no-nonsense figure in rugby league, does not take kindly to being jilted. The club’s statement on Wednesday hinted at their displeasure with Fifita, despite wishing him well. Politis hasn’t spoken to Wayne Bennett since 2005 after a handshake deal fell through, so it’s unlikely he will forgive Fifita anytime soon.

CAN THEY KEEP ANGUS CRICHTON?
The pursuit of Fifita initially raised eyebrows, including those of Phil Gould, who questioned why the Roosters needed the explosive back-rower. With Sitili Tupouniua, Nat and Egan Butcher, and Siua Wong already signed, Crichton’s future looked uncertain. His $600,000-a-year contract expires in October, and he reportedly had offers from Rugby Australia and South Sydney. Publicly expressing his dismay, Crichton might now demand the $850,000-a-year Fifita was offered.

### HOW WILL THE ROOSTERS USE THE MONEY?
The Roosters might offer the $3.3M Fifita contract to Crichton to smooth over tensions. However, they also have substantial funds available due to the impending departures of high-paid players like Joseph Suaalii, Joey Manu, Luke Keary, and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. The club is exploring the NRL marketplace and has been linked to several potential signings, including Kalyn Ponga and Blaize Talagi. The Roosters may wait until November 1 to find marquee names for the long-term.
