Kansas Jayhawks Score Local Talent: Basketball Lands Walk-On Commitment from High School Standout
Kansas basketball is currently in the process of filling two scholarships vacated by former commits Labaron Philon and Riley Kugel. Head Coach Bill Self is actively scouting the transfer portal for potential additions to the team. However, the coaching staff also has the option to add walk-on players who do not require a scholarship.
On the same day that Self announced former Cal State Northridge guard Chris Carter’s entry into the portal, Kansas secured a commitment from Will Thengvall, a senior at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School in Wichita. Thengvall, a native of Wichita, will join the team as a non-scholarship player for the upcoming season, strengthening the Jayhawks’ walk-on roster.
Thengvall’s impressive performance on the court earned him recognition, as he averaged 17.6 points per game and was awarded the 5A boys Player of the Year title after a standout senior season. Standing at 6-foot-4, the guard will transition to Lawrence this summer upon completing his high school classes and will officially become a part of the team.
He will join Justin Cross, Wilder Evers, Dillon Wilhite, and Patrick Cassidy as walk-ons with remaining eligibility, following the graduation of longtime Jayhawk Michael Jankovich this past season. While Thengvall’s addition may not generate headlines, his presence promises to enhance the team’s practice environment with his competitive spirit.
