Before the Boston Red Sox signed Cooper Criswell in December 2023, he was relatively unknown to many fans of the team.
However, since joining the Red Sox, Criswell has emerged as a reliable asset for the team’s starting rotation, particularly in the absence of pitchers like Nick Pivetta, Garrett Whitlock, and Brayan Bello.
In six appearances for Boston, the 27-year-old right-hander has maintained an impressive 2.10 ERA, tallying 25 strikeouts and issuing only five walks across 25.2 innings. Now, on May 16, he’ll have the opportunity to face his former team, the Tampa Bay Rays, and showcase his capabilities.
Having played for the Rays last season, Criswell’s career took a turn when they designated him for assignment in November to make room for other prospects. Since then, his performance with the Red Sox has been a testament to his turnaround.
During his time with Tampa in 2023, Criswell struggled, posting a 5.73 ERA in 33 innings across 10 relief appearances. However, under the guidance of individuals like Andrew Bailey and Craig Breslow within the Red Sox organization, Criswell has flourished. Breslow, in particular, identified Criswell’s potential as an elite strike thrower, a quality that has been evident in his recent performances.
While Criswell initially competed for a spot in Boston’s starting rotation during spring training, he narrowly missed out. However, the decision to send him to Worcester to maintain his readiness as a starter has paid dividends.
Looking ahead, with Whitlock expected to return to action, there is uncertainty surrounding Criswell’s role with the team. Nevertheless, his upcoming start against the Rays on May 16 could potentially be his last opportunity to showcase his abilities for the big league club for the time being.
As the Red Sox aim to secure a series split against Criswell’s former team and maintain their position in the American League East standings, all eyes will be on Criswell as he takes the mound once again, eager to demonstrate his capabilities.
