“Scott Praises Bombers Ruckman, Says He ‘Looks Like He’s 26′”

Essendon ruckman Todd Goldstein continues to defy age expectations, resembling the AFL’s version of Benjamin Button as he gears up to face his former team, North Melbourne, on Sunday.

Goldstein, who played 315 games over 16 seasons for North Melbourne, joined Essendon at the end of last year. His move has significantly benefited both the club and himself, contributing to Essendon’s rise to third place on the ladder. This season, Goldstein is averaging 24.8 hitouts and two clearances per game over nine matches.

With fellow ruckman Sam Draper out for six to eight weeks following knee surgery, Goldstein’s role has become even more crucial. Despite his age, turning 36 on July 1, Essendon coach Brad Scott believes Goldstein shows no signs of needing rest, describing him as looking like he’s 26.

“There’s no indication he needs a rest, but we’ll be smart about it and work out what’s best for him. He’s a player who thrives on work. He’s in as good shape as anyone on our list at the moment,” Scott said.

Goldstein, who hasn’t played in the finals since 2016, is set to break that streak with Essendon’s strong form this season. The Bombers are favorites to win against a struggling North Melbourne, which holds a 0-9 record and a low percentage of 56.3.

Although Essendon’s recent 20-point victory over Greater Western Sydney was their biggest this year, Scott remains focused on continual improvement. He commends the players for setting high standards and striving to improve, noting the pride among the supporters in the team’s performance.
