“Cardinals Shake-Up: Changes Coming, But Marmol Likely Safe”
Busch Stadium aims to radiate positivity for the St. Louis Cardinals, from the grand Opening Day festivities with the Clydesdales to the warm greetings by stadium announcer John Ulett welcoming fans to baseball heaven before each home game. Cardinals games are envisioned as a space to passionately support the Redbirds.
However, a recent incident at the stadium shattered this carefully crafted image. During a game against the Boston Red Sox on May 17, a message wishing someone a happy birthday ended with a call for the dismissal of Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol.
Fans have been intensely critical of Marmol since the Cardinals’ disappointing last-place finish in 2023, and the team’s current 19-25 record has once again left them at the bottom of the division in 2024. Despite the team’s struggles, President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak expressed his confidence in Marmol during Spring Training in 2024 by extending his contract through 2026.
Many fans perceive Marmol as a mere “yes man” for Mozeliak and a puppet of the front office. This sentiment was heightened during the Willson Contreras incident in 2023 when Marmol and Mozeliak displayed a lack of faith in Contreras, temporarily benching him after realizing he didn’t match up defensively to Yadier Molina.
Marmol has been embroiled in other controversies during his tenure with the Cardinals, including a public spat with former outfielder Tyler O’Neill over perceived effort during a play in April 4, 2023. Additionally, an odd incident unfolded on April 15, 2023, during a game against the Oakland Athletics, where Marmol physically intervened with a security guard while attempting to challenge a call, resulting in a missed opportunity.
On the field, Marmol’s decision-making has been questioned, like trying a bunt with cleanup hitter Alec Burleson with a runner on first and two outs in the first inning. Various interim managers have been proposed should Mozeliak decide to replace Marmol, including notable figures like Molina and Albert Pujols.
While the Cardinals may stick with Marmol for the remainder of his contract, St. Louis fans have managed to see through the stadium’s façade, expressing their discontent despite efforts to maintain a positive atmosphere within Busch Stadium.
