Game-Changing Visit: 5-Star Safety Jonah Williams Tours Oregon Alongside Ducks’ 4-Star QB Commit Akili Smith Jr.

Oregon is in contention for several top-tier prospects as it aims for another highly-ranked recruiting class.

One standout target for the Ducks is Jonah Williams, a five-star safety from Galveston, Texas, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 205 pounds. Williams is back in Eugene this weekend, joining forces with Oregon’s four-star quarterback commit, Akili Smith Jr., who is considered one of the top commitments for coach Dan Lanning.

Williams recently narrowed down his list of preferred schools to seven, with Oregon making the cut. While Oklahoma seemed to have momentum in his recruitment earlier in the spring, Texas A&M has surged ahead according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. Nevertheless, the Ducks are determined to maintain their contender status with a strong showing this weekend.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Williams shared, “I’m very excited. I have a lot of family that lives near the campus. I’ve always had a great feeling talking to them, and Oregon has been a favorite for everyone because of their jerseys. My brother and I have always been fans of Oregon.”

Williams has been actively visiting schools this year, with a series of official visits lined up. Texas A&M, USC, LSU, and Oregon are all scheduled to host him. The prediction from On3 VP of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong leans towards Texas A&M landing Williams, especially after his visits to College Station this spring. The appeal includes Mike Elko’s track record in player development and the versatile role they envision for Williams in their defense.

Ranked as the No. 10 overall prospect and the top safety in the 2025 cycle by the On3 Industry Ranking, Williams holds the No. 3 spot among players in Texas.

Looking at Oregon’s recruiting class, the Ducks have secured commitments from seven players so far in the 2025 cycle, placing them at No. 6 in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.

Leading the class is Dallas Wilson, a five-star wide receiver from Tampa Bay Tech, who is ranked No. 22 in the On3 Industry Ranking. He is joined by Nasir Wyatt, a four-star linebacker from Santa Ana, California, and Dierre Hill, a four-star athlete from Belleville, Illinois, both of whom are in the top 150.

Akili Smith Jr., the son of former Ducks star and NFL top-5 pick Akili Smith, expressed his excitement about committing to Oregon, emphasizing his lifelong connection to the program and his aspirations to continue his father’s legacy while forging his own path.

The class also boasts two more highly-rated receivers in Isaiah Mozee from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Cooper Perry from Scottsdale, Arizona, along with Matthew Johnson, a four-star defensive lineman from Concord, California. All seven commits are considered top-300 recruits.
