Luke Shields Named MW Coach of the Year, Five Broncos Secure Spots on MW All-Tournament Team

Boise State head coach Luke Shields has been named the Mountain West Coach of the Year, while five Broncos—Sam Sippel, James Van Herzeele, Jan Lucca Marquardt, Caden Moortgat, and Jett Middleton—earned spots on the MW Championship All-Tournament Team. The conference’s head coaches voted on the awards, which were announced Friday by the league office.

This marks the second consecutive year Shields has received the MW Coach of the Year honor, having also won in 2023. Additionally, it is the fourth time in his collegiate coaching career, with two previous wins at Fresno State before joining Boise State.

This year is the first time the MW has recognized an all-tournament team, and the Broncos dominated the selections following their recent team title victory.

In singles, Boise State took three of the six awards. Sippel, named the MW Championship MVP, secured the all-tournament team spot for No. 1 singles after winning both his semifinal and final matches.

Van Herzeele was honored for his performance in No. 3 singles, highlighted by his victory against San Diego State in the championship match.

Jan Lucca Marquardt earned a spot on the singles team at No. 4 by winning both his matches against Air Force in the opening round and San Diego State in the championship.

In doubles, Boise State claimed two of the three honors. Sippel and Marquardt were recognized for their undefeated play on court one, while Moortgat and Middleton earned accolades for their perfect record on court two, going 3-0.
