Why a ‘special’ Broncos moment suggests life without Reynolds could still be promising.
Brisbane: Jock Madden’s field goal during the Magic Round shows that life after Adam Reynolds might not be so bad for the Broncos.
Reynolds, the experienced halfback, led Kevin Walters’ team to the 2023 grand final, only to lose to Nathan Cleary’s masterful performance. At 33, Reynolds has been crucial in Brisbane’s rise, improving from 16th in 2020 and 14th in 2021 to second place just two seasons later.
However, Reynolds suffered a torn biceps in Round 9, sidelining him until Round 22. This could be a blessing in disguise if the Broncos finish high on the ladder, giving Madden a chance to prove himself. The 24-year-old, who struggled to secure a regular spot with the Tigers in 2021 and 2022, joined the Broncos as Reynolds’ understudy in 2023. Now, with half a season of experience, Madden could become a key player for the team.
Veteran winger Corey Oates praised Madden’s patience and work ethic, noting how well he and Ezra Mam play together. Madden’s field goal in front of a packed Suncorp Stadium to defeat the Sea Eagles was a moment he had dreamed of and practiced for, demonstrating his readiness to lead.
Reynolds, whose contract extends to the end of the 2025 season, has been a mentor to Madden, providing valuable advice and support. Madden’s recent performance and his growing confidence suggest he could be a strong contender to replace Reynolds when the time comes.
Oates also mentioned that young talent Coby Black, signed on a development deal for 2024, might also be in the running for a future role. The competition between Madden and Black could foster further improvement.
Coach Walters expressed confidence in Madden’s abilities and his potential to build strong combinations with teammates. Madden’s increased playtime over the next 12 weeks is seen as a positive development for the team.
