Cubs’ Smyly to Begin Rehab Assignment in South Bend on May 21 Amid Injury Concerns

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — World Series champion and current Chicago Cubs pitcher Drew Smyly is set to make a rehab start with the South Bend Cubs on Tuesday night at Four Winds Field, as announced by Cubs manager Craig Counsell on Monday.

This will mark Smyly’s third start with the South Bend team, having previously pitched there on August 30, 2018, and July 4, 2022. He was part of the Atlanta Braves’ roster when they won the World Series in 2021.

Smyly, 34, last pitched at Wrigley Field on April 21 and was placed on the injured list on April 23 due to a right hip impingement.

Chicago Cubs Rookie Officially Sets Major League Record With Historic Outing

The duration of Smyly’s stay with the South Bend Cubs has not been disclosed.

“Smyly will be the first Chicago Cubs player to rehab in South Bend this season,” the South Bend Cubs stated. “In April, 40-man roster member Brennen Davis played in a week of rehab games before rejoining the Iowa Cubs. In 2022, South Bend hosted both Smyly and lefty Wade Miley (twice) for rehab outings. Smyly’s upcoming appearance will be the 17th Major League rehab assignment since the club became a Cubs affiliate in 2015.”
