James Jordon: Joining Sydney Was the “Best Decision of My Career”

Sydney recruit James Jordon expressed that leaving Melbourne at the end of 2023 was the “best decision of (his) career.”

After playing 65 games for the Demons and winning a premiership as the sub, Jordon, who was delisted and re-signed as a rookie in late 2020, chose to explore his free agency options and ultimately decided to join the Swans.

The 23-year-old often found himself used as a substitute, being subbed in six times and subbed out twice last season. This led to a frustrating year in Melbourne’s red and blue colors.

“It’s been a great move,” Jordon shared on RSN. “I’m loving my time up here… it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made for my footy career and pretty proud of myself for making that (decision).”

He praised Sydney’s head coach, John “Horse” Longmire, and Charlie Gardner for identifying a good opportunity for him at the Swans. “Ever since I met with ‘Horse’ and Charlie Gardner, they identified it was a good opportunity for me to come up here and thankful to be playing good footy.”

Reflecting on his previous season, Jordon admitted, “Last year was a bit frustrating. I was in and out of the team and the sub a lot and then definitely thought long and hard about it. Had a lot of conversations with my manager on what I should do. After that meeting with ‘Horse,’ I came out of that meeting knowing what I wanted to do and haven’t looked back since.”

Jordon has had a notable start with the Swans, adapting to multiple roles on the field and playing an integral part in the team’s success. Despite the impressive performances of teammates Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, and Errol Gulden, Jordon’s contributions have been significant.

In recent weeks, he effectively shut down top players like Jordan Clark (Fremantle) and Sam Walsh (Carlton), demonstrating his defensive prowess and versatility. His ability to limit Clark to 16 disposals and curb Walsh’s influence with 20 possessions at 55% effectiveness highlights his impact.

Jordon also highlighted the importance of the lessons he learned from Melbourne stars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver. “Clarry and Tracca, I learnt a lot off them. I probably wouldn’t be the player I am without them and all the stuff I learnt from them.”

Jordon’s versatility and skill set have made him a valuable asset for the Swans, contributing to their top-of-the-ladder status after Round 10.
