Book Alleges Jim Harbaugh’s Departure from Michigan Was Partially Because of Athletic Director Warde Manuel
In a way, former Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh wrapped up his time in Ann Arbor like a storybook ending. The Michigan Alum finally clinched the school’s first outright national title since 1948 with a perfect 15-0 season, which also included another victory over Ohio State.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing behind the scenes. While Harbaugh basked in the glory, investigations into two scandals loomed over him. One involved alleged recruiting violations, and the other centered on an alleged sign-stealing operation. According to a new book, his strained relationship with Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel played a significant role in his decision to depart for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Last season was truly one for the books in college football. Michigan had a relatively easy early-season schedule, even though Harbaugh had to sit out the first three games due to self-imposed sanctions related to the recruiting probe. Despite these setbacks, they managed to keep winning.
Then, on October 19, news broke of a sign-stealing scandal involving team staffer Connor Stalions. The Big Ten commissioner suspended Harbaugh for the final three regular-season games just before a crucial match against Penn State. Despite this, Michigan emerged victorious and later defeated Ohio State before Harbaugh’s return.
However, it seemed Harbaugh’s frustrations with Manuel were simmering beneath the surface. An excerpt from an upcoming book by Armen Keteyian and John Talty reveals Harbaugh’s discontent with Manuel’s support, especially in front of the Board of Regents. This dissatisfaction came to a head during a conversation with his friend Todd Anson on Coronado Island.
Following this venting session, Harbaugh had an initial interview with the Los Angeles Chargers. His attitude softened afterward, indicating a growing inclination toward accepting the NFL job offer. His concerns about legal battles and perceived adversaries led him to reconsider his position at Michigan.
For Michigan fans, this revelation might spark anger and frustration. It appears that with better handling, Harbaugh might have stayed, despite receiving a lucrative contract offer. However, considering his persistent flirtation with the NFL, perhaps his departure was inevitable.
Looking ahead, if new Wolverine coach Sherrone Moore fails to maintain the program’s standards, fans may ponder what could have been if Harbaugh had remained.
