“Red Sox’s 27-Year-Old Star Pitcher Declares Season’s Conclusion, Looks Toward Elbow Surgery for Return”

Boston Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock has announced the premature end of his season as he prepares for a surgical procedure on his right ulnar collateral ligament, which will involve the insertion of an internal brace.

Whitlock, 27, who previously underwent Tommy John surgery while with the New York Yankees’ farm system in 2019, expressed that this less invasive surgery is currently in the planning stages

The pitcher is slated to consult with Dr. Jeff Dugas in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 29. Despite the setback, Whitlock remains optimistic about his recovery process, noting that rehabilitation from the internal brace surgery is notably less arduous than that of Tommy John surgery, with some pitchers returning to the majors in as little as nine months.

Although Whitlock’s season was off to a promising start with a 1-0 record and a 1.96 ERA in four starts, he landed on the injured list on April 17 due to a strained left oblique. Following a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on May 15, he experienced unexpected elbow pain the next day, leading to the MRI revealing ligament changes.

Despite the setback, Whitlock maintains a positive outlook, expressing determination to return stronger for the 2025 season. He also expressed his desire to continue contributing to the team’s charitable efforts, particularly with the Jimmy Fund, during his rehabilitation period.

Whitlock’s situation mirrors that of fellow pitcher Lucas Giolito, who underwent similar internal brace surgery during spring training after being acquired as a free agent by the Red Sox.

In reflecting on his circumstances, Whitlock emphasized the broader perspective beyond baseball and pledged to persevere through his rehabilitation while remaining engaged with charitable endeavors and preparing for his return to the game next year.
