The Wests Tigers are set to propose a contract extension to their star prop, Stefano Utoikamanu, but he is expected to consider other opportunities in the open market.
Utoikamanu has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if the Tigers don’t finish in the top eight in 2024. However, if he participates in one more Origin game this year, he will be required to stay with the team.
It’s likely that Utoikamanu will attract considerable interest from other clubs.
Journalist Brent Read stated on Triple M, “The Tigers plan to offer Stefano a long-term extension and obviously want to keep him. That hasn’t happened yet, but I expect it to happen soon. However, I don’t think Stefano will accept it and will likely explore the market.”
Utoikamanu’s availability on the market depends on his selection for the Origin game. If he doesn’t play Origin, he can enter the market as soon as the Tigers are out of finals contention. The Tigers remain keen on retaining him.
Despite the Panthers’ prior interest in Utoikamanu, they have recently signed his teammate, Isaiah Papali’i.
Utoikamanu’s contract clause is financially beneficial for him. Brent Read added, “It was a protection mechanism, and looking back, it was a good move because if he doesn’t play Origin, he can hit the market immediately. He’s very valuable right now.”
Additionally, there is speculation about young talent Lachie Galvin potentially leaving due to the Tigers’ slow start and the impending arrival of Jarome Luai. Galvin had previously requested releases in the off-season.
