Amidst Hopeful Beginnings: Impending Departures and Uncertain Futures for Promising Players on the Cleveland Browns Roster

In recent years, general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski have orchestrated a significant overhaul of the Cleveland Browns roster, earning Stefanski two NFL Head Coach of the Year Awards in just four seasons. Their efforts have created a deep roster, evidenced by their ability to navigate through five quarterbacks and still secure a playoff spot. However, with depth comes tough decisions, and this offseason may see the departure of promising players. Here are three Browns players who could face cuts by the end of training camp, with Cleveland hoping to retain them for their practice squad if they clear waivers.

1. James Hudson III, Offensive Tackle:

Originally a defensive lineman, Hudson transitioned to the offensive tackle position during his college years, eventually being drafted by the Browns in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Despite seeing playing time due to injuries on the offensive line, Hudson’s development has been slow, with struggles in penalties and sacks allowed. With competition for roster spots intensifying, particularly with the emergence of rookie Dawand Jones, Hudson’s place on the team is uncertain.

2. David Bell, Wide Receiver:

Selected in the third round out of Purdue, Bell showed promise but faced challenges in meeting expectations, particularly following a lackluster showing at the NFL Combine. While displaying solid route running and hands, Bell’s production dipped in his second year, amidst additions to the receiving corps. With increased competition for playing time, including new additions like Jerry Jeudy and rookie Jamari Thrash, Bell’s roster spot is in jeopardy.

3. Siaki Ika, Defensive Tackle:

The Browns addressed their defensive deficiencies by drafting Ika in the third round, aiming to bolster their run defense. However, Ika’s transition to the NFL has been challenging, marked by limited playing time and lackluster performance when on the field. With a crowded depth chart at defensive tackle, including seasoned veterans and recent draft picks, Ika faces an uphill battle to secure his roster spot for the upcoming season.

As the Browns continue to refine their roster, tough decisions loom, with promising talents potentially facing cuts in a competitive environment.
