“Contract Crisis Closed Clubs Halt Ponga Speculation in Dramatic Turn”
Both the Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Knights have reportedly refuted any possibility of Kalyn Ponga leaving the club. Ponga recently faced contract issues at the Knights regarding an alleged unfulfilled third-party payment. Although it’s believed the matter has been resolved, speculations about his departure persist.
Initially, the Sydney Roosters emerged as a potential destination for Ponga if he were to depart from Adam O’Brien’s team. However, according to News Corp, Ponga’s departure from the Knights is now deemed unlikely, with both clubs dismissing the idea.
Ponga, who has encountered injuries and concussions in recent years, is under contract with the Knights until at least the end of 2027, in what is considered one of the most lucrative deals in the sport, reportedly valued at $1.4 million annually. He signed the contract with the Knights ahead of the 2023 season, opting to reject the Dolphins’ pursuit of him as their primary marquee signing.
Speculating about Ponga’s potential move to the Roosters seemed impractical. Given his preference to play fullback and James Tedesco’s continued presence in the role, it would necessitate a reshuffle within the team. Although Tedesco previously acknowledged the possibility of transitioning to five-eighth in the future, the recent departures of Joseph Manu and Joseph Suaalii to rugby union have likely closed the door on any competition for the fullback position at the Roosters.
While the Roosters might have had salary cap flexibility, with Suaalii and Manu set to leave along with other players at the end of 2024, it seems unlikely now. Ponga has made seven appearances for the Knights this season.
