Heartbreak for Essendon: Update Reveals Serious Injury to Youngster

Essendon utility Nik Cox has avoided a major setback after being subbed out of Saturday’s win over Richmond due to a hamstring injury.

Cox was unable to complete the thrilling victory and was replaced by midfielder Elijah Tsatas at quarter-time.

Following scans after the Dreamtime at the ‘G match, it was confirmed that Cox did not suffer significant damage to his hamstring.

Essendon announced on Monday that the scans showed no strain in Cox’s hamstring, but he will still need to undergo further fitness tests in the coming days.

“Essendon utility Nik Cox has been cleared of any major damage to his hamstring following Saturday’s Dreamtime at the ‘G,” a club update stated.

“After being subbed out at quarter-time, Cox had scans yesterday on his hamstring, which pleasingly showed no strain. The 22-year-old will be monitored through the week, but the club expects his symptoms to resolve quite quickly.

“Essendon will provide a further update in the club’s injury report released [Tuesday] afternoon.”

The Bombers will welcome back young forward Harrison Jones for this week’s trip to the Gold Coast after he served his one-game suspension for rough conduct.

Midfielder Will Setterfield is close to returning from a knee injury, while the club has not yet disclosed the full extent of Ben Hobbs’ calf injury.

Hobbs was withdrawn from Essendon’s squad to face the Tigers last Friday due to a new setback, with Tsatas taking his place.

Essendon will face the Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium this Sunday before a King’s Birthday eve clash with Carlton the following week. The Bombers have a Round 14 bye before returning to play West Coast on Sunday, June 23 at Marvel Stadium.
