The Wests Tigers are preparing to extend the contract of their standout prop, Stefano Utoikamanu, although he is likely to explore opportunities in the open market.
Utoikamanu holds the option to depart if the Tigers fail to secure a top-eight finish in 2024. However, an intriguing clause in his contract stipulates that he remains with the club if he participates in one more Origin game this year.
Anticipated to garner significant interest from rival clubs, Utoikamanu’s market availability hinges on his selection for Origin once again.
“If he doesn’t play Origin, he has the option to enter the market when the team is mathematically out of finals contention,” explained journalist Brent Read on Triple M.
While the Panthers have previously shown interest in Utoikamanu, they recently finalized the signing of his Tigers teammate, former Parramatta Eel Isaiah Papali’i. Utoikamanu’s contract clause serves as a financial safeguard, providing him immediate market access if he doesn’t participate in Origin.
Furthermore, speculation surrounds young talent Lachie Galvin, who may seek an exit due to the Tigers’ slow start to the season and the impending arrival of Jarome Luai.
“He requested releases during the off-season, which received significant attention,” Read added.
