Sydney Swans Midfielder Chad Warner Pauses Contract Talks Amid Growing Interest from West Coast Eagles
Sydney dynamo Chad Warner seems to have balked at a contract extension offer from the Swans, hitting the brakes on talks with the New South Wales outfit. While his current deal doesn’t expire until next year, Warner is a key figure in Sydney’s plans, especially after the successful re-signing spree that secured key players like Errol Gulden, James Rowbottom, and Oliver Florent.
The Swans still have to secure extensions for Will Hayward and Logan McDonald beyond 2024, but they’re optimistic about Hayward’s commitment despite significant outside interest. CEO Tom Harley expressed confidence in both Hayward and Warner extending their stays with the club, emphasizing Warner’s importance to their future plans.
According to reports from The Age, Warner turned down a contract extension earlier this year and has paused negotiations. If he remains unsigned into next year, clubs in his native Western Australia are likely to show strong interest, with West Coast Eagles eyeing him as a potential solution to their midfield needs.
Eagles’ football chief Gavin Bell indicated their interest in Warner, stating they’d welcome him back to Perth if he decides to make a move. Warner’s outstanding performances in 2024, particularly in recent games, have elevated his standing in the league, drawing comparisons to Brownlow Medal contender Isaac Heeney.
His explosive displays on the field, averaging over 25 disposals and three goals per game in his last three outings, have put him among the top midfielders in the competition.
