Angus Crichton Opens Up on NRL Future After Roosters Miss David Fifita
Sydney Roosters star Angus Crichton is uncertain about where he will play in 2025, as no progress has been made on a new deal with the Roosters. Crichton previously made headlines for criticizing the club’s pursuit of Titans star David Fifita, but insists he has moved on and harbors no resentment.
Crichton had declared he wouldn’t play second fiddle to Fifita and challenged coach Trent Robinson to explain the situation. However, Fifita surprised the NRL by opting to stay with the Gold Coast Titans, extending his contract until the end of 2026.
The Roosters’ unsuccessful attempt to sign Fifita highlighted their interest in a player for Crichton’s position, left back row. Crichton is off contract at the end of 2024, and there have been no further discussions with the club about his future.
“They weren’t keen to re-sign me at the start of the year, but now that I’m playing well, they are,” Crichton said. “I understand the club’s position; it’s business, not personal. That’s recruitment.”
Crichton admitted feeling hurt initially but has since moved past it, expressing no hard feelings towards the Roosters. “I spoke from the heart, but there’s no love lost for the club. I have deep love for the team, coaches, and players.”
With his future beyond 2024 still unclear, Crichton has received interest from multiple NRL clubs, as well as French and Japanese rugby clubs. His management has met with Roosters’ Nick Politis, but no deal has been reached. Crichton remains undecided about his plans beyond this season.
