CJ’s Journey: From Injury Setbacks to Heritage Pride – A Story of Resilience and Identity

You often sense Changkuoth Jiath before seeing him, as he meticulously descends from Hawthorn’s training base at Waverley Park with music blaring from his speaker. However, on the first day of training in 2024, he was notably absent, still in Qatar.

Upon Jiath’s return for pre-season a few days later, following an intensive stint at the world-renowned sports medicine facility Aspetar, there was optimism that he would overcome the series of injuries that had plagued his career.

Jiath’s meteoric rise in the football world captivated audiences in 2021, but his progress was hindered by injuries, ranging from a PCL to an Achilles, with a particularly concerning pattern of soft tissue issues. Despite a breakout season of 16 games, his appearances dwindled to just eight last year, signaling a worrying trend.

However, setbacks notwithstanding, Jiath persevered. Over the summer, he faced additional challenges with hamstring and quad strains, further testing his resolve.

Recovery and rehabilitation became a team effort at Hawthorn, with individuals like high-performance director Peter Burge, physiotherapist Andrew Lambart, and others playing pivotal roles. Now, with unwavering determination, ‘CJ’ is back in action.

Reflecting on his journey, Jiath shared, “It’s been one of the toughest experiences of my career. But I remained confident, supported by my family’s optimism. Everyone has their own story, and for me, it was about being present and taking the time needed to heal.”

While many of his peers from the draft class have amassed impressive game counts, Jiath’s return to the field marks a pivotal moment. His recent AFL appearance after 372 days was a poignant reminder of his resilience.

Adding to Hawthorn’s vibrancy both on and off the field, Jiath injects contagious energy and camaraderie. His celebratory handshake and bow with teammate Jack Ginnivan, inspired by NBA icon LeBron James, symbolize their shared passion for the game.

With his contract negotiations looming, Jiath’s return to form serves as a testament to his value to the club. Despite the financial investment in his fitness, including a trip to Qatar, Hawthorn recognizes him as a vital asset in their rebuilding efforts.

Furthermore, Jiath’s influence extends beyond the game, particularly within the South Sudanese community. Alongside emerging talents like Mac Andrew and Leek Aleer, he embodies inspiration and resilience, inspiring future generations.

As Jiath continues to lead both on and off the field, his presence resonates, setting the tempo for Hawthorn’s upward trajectory.
