Breaking News: Longhorns Announce Major Signing of Clemson Star for 2024
Steve Sarkisian has prioritized strengthening the defensive secondary since taking over the Texas Longhorns football program.
His dedication to improving the team’s roster was evident in the 2024 transfer portal.
One of Sarkisian’s significant pickups from the portal was former Clemson Tigers safety Andrew Mukuba, who is now vying for the No. 1 spot at the position.
Texas already had a strong safety lineup before Mukuba’s transfer to Austin, retaining veterans Michael Taaffe and Derek Williams, as well as recent recruit Xavier Filsaime.
With such depth at a position typically occupied by one or two players, the question remains: which Longhorn will become the go-to safety in 2024?
The case for Andrew Mukuba:
Despite Clemson’s struggles during the 2023-24 season, Andrew Mukuba was a standout on their defense.
In his third year at Clemson, Mukuba recorded 42 total tackles and 6 pass deflections. Over his collegiate career, he has accumulated 1 sack, 1 interception, and 142 total tackles.
Standing at 6-foot-0 and 195 pounds, Mukuba compensates for his size with speed and ball awareness.
His experience at the national level gives him an advantage over freshman Filsaime and sophomore Williams.
The case for Michael Taaffe:
Michael Taaffe has spent two seasons with the Longhorns, delivering an impressive performance in 2023.
He recorded 48 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 2 pass deflections, proving to be a reliable asset for Texas’ defense last season.
