Kansas Athletic Director Travis Goff Secures Contract Extension, Set for Leadership Role Through 2031

Kansas University’s athletic director, Travis Goff, has committed to remaining in Lawrence until 2031, as confirmed by The Star on Wednesday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel initially broke the news of the contract extension. Under the terms of the agreement, Goff’s base salary will jump to $1.3 million this year and escalate annually. His new title will be “Director of Athletics/Vice Chancellor for Athletics,” and his contract is effective until May 31, 2031.

Expressing his gratitude, Goff acknowledged the university’s role in his life and career, emphasizing the privilege of working with exceptional coaches and staff, as well as the dedication to serving Jayhawk student-athletes and fans.

Goff’s salary will see incremental increases, starting from $1.3 million in Year 1 (June 1, 2024-May 31, 2025), including retention bonuses. However, should he depart before May 31, 2026, a buyout of $5 million is stipulated, reducing annually until 2030.

Since assuming the role in 2021, Goff has overseen significant developments within Kansas Athletics, including the hiring of football coach Lance Leipold, multiple contract extensions for key personnel, and successful coaching appointments across various sports. Under his leadership, KU men’s basketball secured a national championship in 2022, while substantial investment has been directed towards stadium and facility renovations.

KU Chancellor Douglas Girod commended Goff’s contributions, highlighting his commitment to excellence and integrity within the athletic department, positioning Kansas for sustained success. Goff’s extension marks a pivotal moment in the university’s athletic trajectory, reaffirming his dedication to the Jayhawk community.
