Young Michigan Corner Earns High Praise from Sherrone Moore
The Michigan football team has a lot of talent to replace from their national championship-winning roster. The Wolverines excelled last season due to their abundance of NFL-caliber players. They have also lost players to the transfer portal and injuries. One significant area in need of replenishment is the secondary, with defensive back Jyaire Hill making notable progress this offseason.
Hill, a freshman last season, saw limited playing time but still managed to record eight total tackles, four of which were solo.
With Michigan needing to fill talent gaps, Hill is likely to have a more prominent role this season. The Wolverines added several players to the secondary via the transfer portal, but head coach Sherrone Moore has been particularly impressed with Hill.
“He’s got length, speed, athleticism, and fearlessness. He tackles and makes plays on the ball. He’s everything you want in a corner,” Moore said on the In The Trenches podcast.
This is encouraging news for Michigan fans, as the Wolverines adopt a next-man-up mentality following the loss of several stars in the secondary. Hill is expected to see more field time next season.
**Key Losses in Michigan’s Secondary**
Michigan had one of the best defenses in college football last season, largely due to their secondary. However, several key players from that group are no longer with the team.
Mike Sainristil, the leader of the secondary, and Josh Wallace have both moved on to the NFL. Keon Sabb transferred to Alabama, and Rod Moore, who was expected to be a key player, recently tore his ACL.
Despite these losses, Michigan retains standout defensive back Will Johnson, a future first-round pick who will lead the secondary in 2024.
While the Wolverines lost much of their secondary talent this offseason, they appear ready to reload for the upcoming season.
