Edmonton Oilers Appoint Kalle Larsson as Senior Director of Player Development

The Edmonton Oilers expanded their front office on Thursday by hiring Kalle Larsson as their senior director of player development.

Larsson, 42, brings extensive experience from his nine seasons with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL, where he helped the team become consistent playoff contenders. Before his time at Dubuque, he spent three seasons coaching in the NCAA’s third division and parts of two years with the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers.

Joining Dubuque in 2015-16 as director of player personnel, Larsson was promoted to general manager after three seasons and later added the role of president of hockey operations in 2022. Under his leadership, 95 percent of Fighting Saints players advanced to Division I NCAA schools, with many becoming award winners and all-star team members.

Originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, Larsson was named the USHL’s general manager of the year in 2020 after leading his team to a 33-13-3 record, though that year’s playoffs were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Brad Kwong, managing partner of the Fighting Saints, praised Larsson’s impact, stating, “Kalle’s impact on the Dubuque Fighting Saints is significant. The results during his tenure speak for themselves, but the organization has benefited most from his leadership, professionalism, and character. We will all miss him and wish him the best in Edmonton.”

In February 2023, Larsson signed a four-year contract extension with the Fighting Saints. Former Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli, a founding member of the Fighting Saints ownership group, commended Larsson, saying, “Kalle’s record speaks for itself. He excels in player evaluation, managing personnel, and other crucial aspects of the job. The Fighting Saints are fortunate to have him.”

At the Oilers, Larsson will collaborate with senior management and coaches at the NHL and AHL levels to create and implement comprehensive development plans for each player. He will also oversee and manage development for Oilers draft selections and signed prospects within the organization.
