Hannay Steps Up: Eels’ Coaching Search Intensifies with Josh Hannay’s Candidacy

Former North Queensland stalwart and current Queensland Origin assistant coach, Josh Hannay, has thrown his hat into the ring for the head coaching position at Parramatta, expressing his keen interest in the role. Hannay, who has amassed extensive coaching experience across various positions, including interim head coach roles at the Sharks and Cowboys, as well as serving as an assistant coach for the Queensland Maroons, believes he is well-prepared for the challenge.

In light of Brad Arthur’s departure after an 11-year tenure, the Eels are actively seeking a new head coach for the 2025 season. While interim coach Trent Barrett has not definitively committed to pursuing the role permanently, the club has initiated a comprehensive search for the ideal candidate.

Following discussions between Hannay’s manager, Chris Orr, and Parramatta Eels officials, Hannay publicly expressed his interest in the position, emphasizing the appeal of the opportunity presented by the Eels. Despite Hannay’s current commitments at Cronulla and with the Maroons, he acknowledges the allure of the Eels’ potential for growth and their substantial fan base.

Despite the Eels currently sitting in 14th place and facing the risk of finishing with the wooden spoon, Hannay remains optimistic about the team’s roster, particularly highlighting the strengths of their halves combination and the presence of promising young talent.

While Hannay is contracted with the Sharks until the end of 2026, head coach Craig Fitzgibbon has indicated a willingness to support Hannay’s career progression should a top coaching opportunity arise. Meanwhile, Trent Barrett reflects on his readiness for the challenge, drawing from his prior experiences as a head coach with Canterbury and Manly.
