Bruce Feldman: For Ryan Day at Ohio State, It’s ‘Championship or Bust’

FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman believes that Ryan Day‘s tenure at Ohio State hinges on winning a national championship.

Day’s career, despite feeling extensive, is relatively short. Entering 2024, both he and the Buckeyes are strong contenders for the college football national title, intensifying the pressure in Columbus.

“I hate to say it like this, but I feel like it is national championship or bust for them,” Feldman said on The Herd. “People forget they came within a field goal of probably winning the national title when they played the CFP semifinal against Georgia. They were up by double digits. (CJ) Stroud played great, reflecting his current NFL performance, and Marvin Harrison Jr. getting knocked out of the game impacted their chances…

“They would have beaten TCU, I think we all agree on that. And he would have a national title, which might have changed the pressure dynamics. And they might have beaten Michigan last year.”

Day boasts a 56-8 record as Ohio State’s head coach, never losing more than two games in a single season.

“I think he’s a terrific coach,” Feldman said. “His record is fantastic. However, he has lost the one game that matters most. It’s not the only game that matters, but it is crucial… As successful as Urban (Meyer) was, he had games where he would falter. They got drilled by Purdue and Iowa, but Ryan Day isn’t having those games…

“It’s interesting now. They have produced an elite group of receivers and a dynamic passing game, setting them apart in the Big Ten. Now, bringing Chip Kelly back, who always emphasizes running the football, adds a new dynamic.”

Feldman noted that Kelly’s return could be the final piece Day’s offense needs.

“I also think Kelly acts as a pressure release valve for Day since no one knows him better,” Feldman said. “Amidst all the pressure, several things have worked in Ohio State’s favor. (Jim) Harbaugh leaving is significant because he gave Michigan a physical toughness identity. Maintaining that will be harder for Sherrone Moore.”

Given Ohio State’s offseason moves, excuses are running thin for Day.

“Ohio State’s loss appears to have galvanized their NIL efforts,” Feldman said. “They got Caleb Downs, arguably the best defensive player, who left Alabama after a phenomenal freshman year. He will make a huge difference. They continue to recruit well…

“I think it’s them and Georgia for the national title. We’ll see how the season plays out, but this is a prime opportunity for Ryan Day to prove many people wrong.”
