Heartbreak as 22-Year-Old Key Defender Sidelined by VFL Shoulder Injury

Essendon’s key defensive depth has taken another blow in 2024, with 22-year-old Zach Reid forced off the field in the VFL due to a shoulder injury on Sunday.

The injury occurred during Essendon’s 72-point loss to Box Hill, with the club announcing on social media that Reid would not return to the game. This adds to a growing list of injuries for the 202cm key back, who previously missed time this season with a hamstring strain and has played just nine senior games in his four-year career.

Reid underwent hamstring surgery last year following multiple issues and also dealt with a stress fracture in his back during his first year at the club, an injury that resurfaced before the 2023 season.

The acquisition of Ben McKay in the off-season has been vital for the Bombers’ success in 2024, given their lack of defensive depth exacerbated by Reid’s injury. As a top-10 pick in the 2020 draft, there is still potential for Reid to establish himself in the AFL, and the club hopes this setback won’t keep him out for long.

With the Bombers currently second on the ladder, the team will rely on Ben McKay’s continued health as they work to recover and strengthen their key defensive positions.
