Breaking News: Oklahoma Football Stars Nominated for 2025 College Hall of Fame
The Oklahoma football program boasts a rich history of legendary players, and it’s always refreshing when these former stars receive recognition long after their playing days. On Monday, three former Sooners were named to the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Leading the nominations are linebacker Rocky Calmus and quarterback Josh Heupel, now head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers.
Also on the ballot is former Oklahoma defensive back George Cumby. From 1976 to 1979, Cumby earned Big Eight Defensive Player of the Year twice, became a two-time First-team All-American, and recorded 405 tackles, the fifth-most in team history. He played eight years in the NFL, including an All-Pro season in 1982 with the Green Bay Packers.
Rocky Calmus, who starred at Oklahoma during the 2000 and 2001 seasons, is looking to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The Sooners won the national title in 2000 with a defense that allowed only 14.8 points per game. Calmus earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors, was a consensus All-American, and in 2001, won the Butkus Award and Jack Lambert Trophy.
Quarterback Josh Heupel led the Oklahoma offense during their 2000 BCS Championship run. He threw for 3,392 yards and 20 touchdowns, completing 64.7% of his passes. In the Big 12 Championship, Heupel threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns, leading the team to victory over Florida State in the BCS Championship. He won several awards, including AP College Football Player of the Year and Walter Camp Player of the Year.
