Source Behind Anti-Bryan Harsin Quote Claims: ‘I’m the Last Person to Do Hugh Freeze a Favor
Split Zone Duo’s Steven Godfrey issued a fiery response to Bryan Harsin’s suggestion that AthlonSports fabricated a quote from an anonymous head coach regarding his alleged dislike for Hugh Freeze.
“I handled the scouting report, which was compiled from various league sources,” Godfrey countered. “Coaches have always gossiped about each other. I am the last person who would do Hugh Freeze a favor. They outplayed you, Hars.”
As an Ole Miss graduate, Godfrey’s aversion to Freeze may stem from personal ties, particularly given the circumstances of Freeze’s departure from Oxford, Mississippi.
Harsin’s assertion that coaches wouldn’t anonymously criticize others was met with strong disagreement from Godfrey, who dismissed it in light of the competitive nature of SEC coaches. The revelation of an SEC coaches’ group chat, disclosed by Freeze, hints at a different dynamic behind the scenes compared to public personas.
While acknowledging the talent gap between Harsin’s and Freeze’s teams, it’s plausible that someone within the conference would commend Freeze while implicitly criticizing Harsin. This sentiment may originate from coaches with significant tenure in the SEC, such as Lane Kiffin or Kirby Smart, or those consistently employed in the league over the past few years.
