Top Linebacker in Texas After Blockbuster Transfer
Steve Sarkisian has transformed the Texas Longhorns into a powerhouse football team as they head into the SEC and the 2024 season. With talent across the roster, Texas is expected to be among the top teams in the nation once again.
Following a loss to the Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoff semifinals, the Longhorns are seeking redemption, leading to intense competition both on and off the field. As the spring practices wind down and summer ball approaches, one of the key positions up for grabs this fall is the top linebacker spot in Sarkisian’s defense.
The Longhorns have a wealth of talent at the linebacker position, including returning star David Gbenda, second-year player Liona Lefau, and redshirt freshman Derion Gullette.
David Gbenda, a senior with extensive experience, totaled 50 tackles and 1.5 sacks last season. His career at Texas has included impressive performances, including an interception during his sophomore season in 2020. Gbenda is well-positioned to be the top linebacker for the Longhorns in 2024.
Liona Lefau and Derion Gullette, while less experienced, are also promising prospects. Lefau played in all 14 games last season and is expected to show growth in his second year. Gullette, who redshirted last season, has the physical attributes to become a standout linebacker for Texas.
The competition for the top linebacker position promises to be fierce as Texas prepares for the upcoming season.
