Doubtless Islanders and Penguins to Swap Pageau & Rakell
The New York Islanders’ 2024 offseason has been ongoing for more than a month, during which they have already made notable moves. They secured the signature of top Russian free agent Maxim Tsyplakov and executed a significant draft trade. On the other hand, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been noticeably quieter, remaining relatively inactive throughout their extended offseason. Despite this, with both teams looking to shake up their rosters, there is speculation about a potential swap of core players.
A trade that could make sense is swapping Jean-Gabriel Pageau for Rickard Rakell. Rakell was acquired by the Penguins at the 2022 Trade Deadline and impressed with his performance, earning a contract extension. However, his production dipped last season, which might prompt the Penguins to consider trading him now while his value is lower. This is where the Islanders could come in.
Pageau, acquired by the Islanders in 2020, has been their top defensive forward but has not reached the 20-goal mark during his tenure. A trade to Pittsburgh for Rakell could benefit both sides.
Both players have similar salaries, but Pageau has a shorter contract, which could make him easier to move if needed. Rakell’s offensive potential makes him a gamble worth taking for the Islanders, especially considering their need for scoring alongside top players like Mat Barzal and Bo Horvat.
In addition to Rakell, the Islanders might also be interested in Drew O’Connor from the Penguins. O’Connor, who had a breakout season with 16 goals and 33 points, could bolster the Islanders’ forward core at a reasonable cost. This potential trade package could include O’Connor and Rakell going to the Islanders in exchange for Pageau and possibly a draft pick or prospect.
As the offseason progresses, it’s likely that trade talks involving Pageau, Rakell, or O’Connor will intensify. Both the Islanders and Penguins are expected to make significant changes to their rosters following disappointing seasons.
