Local junior Lipoi Hopoi marked his NRL debut in style last Friday night, contributing to the Bulldogs’ impressive 32-2 victory over the Newcastle Knights.
Having progressed through the Bulldogs’ developmental pathways, Hopoi showcased his talents in various competitions including the Harold Matthews, SG Ball, and Jersey Flegg Cups, notably being part of the 2023 Premiership-winning squad. After gaining valuable experience with 33 appearances in the NSW Cup, including nine this season, he finally earned his spot in the top-flight competition.
Hailing from the St. George Dragons in the Canterbury Bankstown District Junior Rugby League (CBDJRL), Hopoi’s journey to the NRL was propelled by a standout season in the Jersey Flegg competition, leading to his inclusion in the NRL preseason squad. His debut alongside childhood teammate Bailey Hayward was a poignant moment, reflecting years of camaraderie and shared aspirations since their early years.
Hopoi’s impressive debut showcased his readiness for the big stage, making significant contributions off the bench with 15 runs for 121 meters in just 38 minutes of play. Notably, he displayed defensive prowess with a crucial try-saving effort, exemplifying his potential as a future star.
