Michigan’s Lethal New Weapon Tapped as 2024 Breakout Star

The Michigan football team will need new players to step up in 2024 as they are losing a lot from the 2023 team. The Wolverines were loaded with talent last season, resulting in a national championship.

Now, Michigan wants to maintain their momentum, and it’s time for new players to make their mark. PFF recently highlighted several potential breakout players for the 2024 season, focusing on Wolverines defensive back Ja’Den McBurrows.

“Michigan’s roster will look different in 2024, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be any less talented,” PFF stated. “There are plenty of big-time recruits ready to step up, especially at defensive back. McBurrows is one of those guys. He played 182 snaps last season, finishing with a 73.1 overall grade and a 73.9 coverage grade.

In 2023, McBurrows recorded seven solo tackles with no misses and four run stops. He was targeted in coverage 13 times but gave up just five catches for 40 yards, with one interception and two pass breakups.”

McBurrows seems poised to take the next step after a solid 2023 season. He debuted during the 2021 season with two total tackles, didn’t play in 2022, and made good strides last season. The Wolverines lost many talented players from their secondary and will need to reload. McBurrows is definitely a player to watch.

Despite losing a lot of talent from their secondary, Michigan’s defense will still be a strength, with key pieces like Will Johnson returning. Johnson is likely a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and is expected to have a huge season in 2024, possibly being the best cornerback in college football.

However, Michigan is losing key players. Mike Sainristil, the unit’s leader, has gone to the NFL along with Josh Wallace, who had a good 2023 season. Keon Sabb, expected to be a starter in 2024, transferred to Alabama. Rod Moore, who sealed the Ohio State win last year with an interception, is out for significant time due to an ACL tear, with his return uncertain.

Despite these losses, Michigan’s defense should still be one of the best in college football, largely due to a strong defensive line. Mason Graham, another future first-round pick, is back, along with Kenneth Grant and Josiah Stewart. This unit is expected to be one of the best in college football.

If Michigan’s defense performs as expected, the Wolverines will be competitive with any team in the country. Last year, they didn’t give up more than 24 points in a game. Replicating that performance will give the team a great chance for another successful season.
