Young Phenom Makes History: Sydney FC Secures Record-Breaking Million-Dollar Transfer Deal

Sydney FC has officially bid farewell to academy graduate Jake Girdwood-Reich, as he embarks on an exciting new journey with MLS outfit St Louis City in a groundbreaking transfer deal for the club.

The versatile midfielder and defender, who recently celebrated his 20th birthday, is set to make his mark in the US after making waves in the Isuzu UTE A-League campaign this season, where Sydney FC advanced to the Semi Finals.

Joining Sydney’s academy at the tender age of 12, Girdwood-Reich’s departure marks a significant milestone for the club, as they secure a seven-figure transfer fee, marking their first million-dollar-plus transfer.

Expressing his gratitude, Girdwood-Reich stated, “I love this club… incredibly thankful for what Sydney FC has done for me over the past eight years… winning the Australia Cup was an unbelievable feeling… it was always my dream to give it a try overseas.”

Girdwood-Reich’s breakout season saw him make 25 appearances, showcasing his versatility in central defense and defensive midfield under the guidance of coach Ufuk Talay. Recognized as Sydney FC’s Rising Star in 2022, he was also named on the bench in the PFA Team of the Season.

As he sets his sights on the MLS, Girdwood-Reich is eager for the challenge, stating, “St Louis are a new club… I hope to show what I can do… to even have the possibility of playing against greats of the game such as Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez excites me.”

Sky Blues boss Talay commended Girdwood-Reich’s progress, affirming, “His development since the age of 12 is a huge credit to Sydney FC’s Academy… Australia’s best young talent will get an opportunity… potentially unlocking a path to an overseas career.”

Girdwood-Reich will be eligible to make his debut for St Louis after the MLS Secondary Transfer Window opens on July 18, marking a new chapter in his promising career.
