Lakers Acquire 6-Time NBA All-Star in Sign and Trade Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers lack the cap space to bring Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan to his hometown, but they could still be a potential destination for the free-agent guard in a sign-and-trade scenario.

Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz suggested the Lakers could acquire DeRozan in a sign-and-trade if D’Angelo Russell declines his $18.7 million player option to help the Lakers get below the first apron. In return, the Lakers could send a combination of Rui Hachimura ($17 million), Austin Reaves ($12.9 million), Gabe Vincent ($11.0 million), and Jarred Vanderbilt ($10.7 million) to the Bulls, depending on the terms of DeRozan’s new contract.

DeRozan, a six-time NBA All-Star, has been unable to reach an agreement with the Bulls on a new contract due to disagreements over the value and length of the deal, according to The Athletic’s Darnell Mayberry. The Bulls are interested in re-signing DeRozan to a two-year deal, but he is seeking more long-term security.

While DeRozan has expressed his fondness for the Lakers and playing in his hometown, he has also stated his desire to remain with the Bulls and finish what he started in Chicago. His midrange scoring ability and clutch play could significantly benefit the Lakers, who are looking for a third star to support LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Despite his impressive performance this season, DeRozan missed out on his third consecutive All-Star selection as the Bulls struggled initially, though he finished second in the Clutch Player of the Year voting behind Stephen Curry.
