NBA Rumors: Cavs GM Reassures Coaching Candidates on Darius Garland’s Trade Status

Cleveland Cavaliers Eyeing James Borrego as Leading Candidate for Head Coach

The Cleveland Cavaliers are navigating a critical juncture as they prepare for the 2024-25 NBA season. The team is actively searching for a new head coach following their decision to part ways with JB Bickerstaff. Additionally, speculation has emerged surrounding the potential trade of star guard Darius Garland. However, Cavs GM Koby Altman has reportedly dispelled these rumors in a conversation with a prominent NBA analyst.

James Borrego has surfaced as a leading candidate to fill the Cavs’ head coaching vacancy. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst offered insights on Borrego, noting his effectiveness with a roster featuring versatile guards. In Cleveland, Borrego would have the opportunity to work with Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, the latter being the subject of trade speculation.

Windhorst reported that Altman is assuring coaching candidates that the Cavs have no intention of trading Garland. Keeping Garland alongside Mitchell could make the head coaching position more attractive to Borrego. Despite some questions about his defensive strategies, Borrego’s offensive acumen could maximize the potential of the Mitchell-Garland duo.

Borrego, who previously coached the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022, is not the only candidate in the running. Kenny Atkinson, currently an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors, is also on Cleveland’s radar. Atkinson’s head coaching stint with the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020 is notable for transforming the team from a struggling franchise to a competitive playoff contender. His expertise in player development could be particularly beneficial for the Cavs.

As the Cavaliers search for their next head coach, the focus remains on the continued development of their roster.

Darius Garland, the fifth overall pick by the Cavs in 2019, has shown significant promise since entering the league. Known for his impressive ball-handling and scoring ability, Garland made a solid impression during his rookie season, averaging 12.3 points and 3.9 assists. His second year saw marked improvement, with averages of 17.4 points, 6.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.

Garland’s breakout came in the 2021-22 season, where he posted career-highs of 21.7 points, 8.6 assists, and 1.3 steals, earning his first All-Star appearance. However, his performance dipped slightly in the 2023-24 season, where he averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in 57 games. His playoff performance also fell short of expectations, as he struggled to score over 20 points per game.

Despite these challenges, GM Koby Altman appears committed to keeping Garland, allowing him time to regain his All-Star form ahead of the 2024-25 season. If Garland can bounce back and further develop his chemistry with teammates, the Cavaliers will be an even more formidable team in the league.

The Cleveland Cavaliers front office has been bustling with activity in recent weeks. Despite a successful season that saw them reach the conference semifinals for the first time since 2018, the Cavs decided it was time for a change at the helm. The team parted ways with head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and is now on the hunt for a new leader.

As they search for the right fit, the Cavaliers also have the opportunity to offer Donovan Mitchell a substantial extension after the NBA Finals. Ensuring Mitchell’s satisfaction with the new head coach is a top priority for the organization.

After interviewing several candidates, one name has emerged as the frontrunner: James Borrego.

James Borrego Gains Momentum in Cavs Coaching Search

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst discussed the Cavaliers’ coaching vacancy on Monday’s episode of “Get Up,” highlighting Borrego’s increasing traction in Cleveland.

“Other candidates that they’re interested in are moving on elsewhere. So James Borrego, who they interviewed about 10 days ago, he’s gaining momentum in Cleveland. He’s expected to interview there early this week as a potential leading candidate developing with the Cavs,” Windhorst reported.

Borrego, currently the top assistant coach for the New Orleans Pelicans, is renowned for his offensive coaching prowess, which aligns with Cleveland’s strategic needs. He previously served as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, where he compiled a 138-163 record.

A New Approach for the Cavaliers

The Cavaliers’ decision to part ways with Bickerstaff stemmed from a perceived disconnect between the coach and the players, despite their on-court achievements. The organization is now looking for a coach who can foster stronger locker room connections while bringing a sharp basketball intellect to the table.

At 46, Borrego is seen as a potential fit to revitalize the team’s dynamics. His experience and offensive strategy could be key in advancing the Cavaliers’ aspirations and keeping their star players, like Donovan Mitchell, content and motivated.

As the Cavaliers move forward in their search, Borrego’s name continues to gain traction, making him a leading candidate for the head coaching position in Cleveland.
