Phillies Star Faces Major Injury, Scheduled for Crucial Facial Surgery
On Tuesday, the Phillies placed J.T. Realmuto on the 10-day injured list due to right knee pain. Rafael Marchán has been called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Realmuto’s spot on the roster.
According to the Phillies, Realmuto is scheduled to undergo right knee meniscectomy surgery on Wednesday in Philadelphia. The timeline for his recovery is currently uncertain.
Realmuto’s placement on the injured list follows a period where he missed three consecutive games in May due to right knee soreness. Manager Rob Thomson noted that Realmuto had been managing the injury, resulting in reduced playing time recently.
In Sunday’s game against the New York Mets in London, Realmuto, known for his baserunning ability, was unexpectedly replaced by pinch-runner Garrett Stubbs in the ninth inning. This decision now appears to be linked to his knee issues.
Before his placement on the injured list, Realmuto was batting .261/.309/.411 for the season and had recently set a Phillies record for the longest hitting streak by a catcher with 17 games, which was also a career-high for the three-time All-Star. However, his performance had declined lately, with an OPS of .618 over his last 15 games.
