Red Sox Reinstate Key Player from Injured List Following…
The Boston Red Sox activated designated hitter Masataka Yoshida from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, while veteran first baseman Garrett Cooper was designated for assignment.
Yoshida, 30, had been out of action since April 28 due to a left thumb strain. He returned to the lineup as the designated hitter on Tuesday, batting fifth against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.
Before his injury, Yoshida had a batting average of .275 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 24 games. During his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester, he went 1-for-7 with two runs scored.
Yoshida made his MLB debut in 2023 and had a strong season, hitting .289 with 15 home runs and 72 RBIs in 140 games for the Red Sox.
Meanwhile, Cooper, 33, hit .171 with five RBIs in 24 games for Boston after being traded from the Chicago Cubs on April 27.
Cooper has a career .265 batting average with 57 home runs and 233 RBIs across 517 games with the New York Yankees (2017), Miami Marlins (2018-23), San Diego Padres (2023), Cubs (2024), and Red Sox. He was an All-Star in 2022.
