In Boston, the Red Sox made a move on Tuesday by designating Garrett Cooper, the struggling first baseman, for assignment. This decision was aimed at opening up a spot on the active roster for Masataka Yoshida, who had been sidelined due to a left thumb strain since May 1. Yoshida, serving as the designated hitter, returned to the lineup on Tuesday, batting fifth.
Manager Alex Cora elaborated on the decision to designate Cooper instead of sending Bobby Dalbec down to Triple-A Worcester and retaining both players within the organization. Cora highlighted Dalbec’s versatility as the determining factor, noting that Dalbec can cover multiple positions, including third base, first base, and the outfield.
Although Dalbec had limited experience in the outfield at the major league level, his recent stint in right field on June 4 against the Braves showcased his adaptability. Prior to that, he had gained valuable experience in the outfield with Worcester this season and in the previous year.
Cooper’s struggles at the plate were a significant factor in the decision, as he had only managed a .171 batting average, .227 on-base percentage, .229 slugging percentage, and a .455 OPS in his 24 games with Boston. Meanwhile, since his recall on June 2, Dalbec had appeared in seven games, including four starts, posting a .214 batting average, .313 on-base percentage, one home run, three RBIs, two walks, and seven strikeouts.
