Brayden Maynard Dream Trade Targets to Bolster the Collingwood Magpies’ Premiership Hopes

After a slow start to their premiership defence, Collingwood is now firmly in the hunt to achieve back-to-back titles for the first time since 1936.

In recent off-seasons, the Pies have been proactive in creating the ideal team under coach Craig McRae, and the 2024 trade period looks to be no different.

Collingwood aims to strengthen their key defensive positions to support captain Darcy Moore, especially with Nathan Murphy’s early retirement and Jeremy Howe’s career winding down.

McRae and his list management team are also likely to pursue an experienced ruckman to assist Darcy Cameron, as Mason Cox isn’t seen as a long-term solution.

Given that many of the game’s top big men are secured by their respective clubs, the Pies will either need to offer substantial trade deals to acquire them or opt for a developing player.

With that in mind, we’ve identified five potential targets for Collingwood as they look to 2025 and beyond.

OTHER TRADE TARGETS: ADELAIDE, BRISBANE, CARLTON

1. Josh Battle
St Kilda’s unrestricted free agent Josh Battle is poised for a significant pay rise as rival clubs aim to lure him from Moorabbin.

In a market where top-tier key defenders are scarce, Battle’s value is exceptionally high. The Pies are vying for the 25-year-old’s signature but face competition from Hawthorn, the Saints, and North Melbourne.

Battle has elevated his game in 2024, averaging 17.6 disposals and 7.9 marks as a key defensive asset under Ross Lyon.

Collingwood can entice the Haileybury product with the promise of blockbuster matches, large MCG crowds, and regular finals appearances, opportunities he’s had limited access to (two appearances) at St Kilda.

Battle would fit seamlessly into Murphy’s former role while also providing a future replacement for Howe.
