NY Giants Bolster Defense with Signing of Former Jaguars CB, Providing Much-Needed Veteran Depth

After missing out on several seasoned cornerbacks this offseason, NY Giants’ general manager Joe Schoen has finally secured a key move. Recently, Schoen and his team invited CB Tre Herndon for a minicamp tryout, and his performance turned heads.

Impressed by Herndon’s showing, Schoen swiftly extended an offer, sealing a one-year deal for the cornerback. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that Herndon has committed to the Giants and will be ready to hit the field once training camp commences.

The standout moment of Herndon’s minicamp was a dazzling pick-six off a tipped Tommy DeVito pass. While it’s uncertain if this play sealed the deal for Schoen, it certainly strengthened Herndon’s case for joining the team.

Having spent his first six seasons with the Jaguars, the 5-11, 190-pound cornerback now transitions to East Rutherford for his seventh year in the NFL. In 2023, Herndon featured in all 16 games, making four starts, and showcased his skills with 46 total tackles, nine pass deflections, and one forced fumble.

With 83 appearances and 34 starts under his belt, Herndon brings valuable experience to the Giants’ cornerback room. While he may not be competing for a starting role, his addition significantly bolsters the team’s depth. Currently, Deonte Banks holds the CB1 position, with Cor’Dale Flott set to challenge for CB2.

Yet, with Flott entering his third year and Banks embarking on his second season with the Giants, the secondary remains relatively youthful under the guidance of Brian Daboll and new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. However, Herndon’s arrival addresses the need for veteran leadership, mitigating the impact of missing out on other offseason targets like Tre’Davious White, Steven Nelson, and Darious Williams.
