Portsmouth lead race for League One defender over West Brom and Cardiff City.

Portsmouth are set to sign Jordan Williams, a free agent following his departure from Barnsley, according to a report from Football Insider. Williams, who spent six years at Oakwell, has attracted interest from several clubs, including Championship sides West Brom and Cardiff City.

However, Portsmouth have agreed terms with the 24-year-old right-back, making him their first signing of the summer as they prepare for life back in the Championship after a 12-year absence.

The 2023/24 season was a triumphant one for Portsmouth, who clinched the League One title with 97 points. Now promoted, the club aims to assemble a competitive squad for manager John Mousinho. Williams’ experience in the Championship will be valuable, having made 201 appearances for Barnsley across all competitions.

Williams’ arrival is seen as a necessary reinforcement for Portsmouth, addressing the departure of Joe Rafferty and uncertainty surrounding Zak Swanson’s future. His signing on a free transfer allows Portsmouth to allocate funds elsewhere in the squad, a strategic move as they plan further additions during the transfer window.

Portsmouth’s ability to secure Williams despite interest from other Championship clubs reflects positively on their recruitment strategy. The club hopes this signing will bolster their chances of establishing themselves in the second tier, following a successful campaign in League One.
