West Coast Ruckman Faces Uncertain Future

Emerging Eagles ruckman Harry Barnett has reaffirmed his commitment to West Coast by signing a multi-year contract extension.

Set to finish his rookie contract at the end of this season, the South Australian has extended his deal for an additional two years, securing his place with the team until the end of the 2026 season.

“I’m really excited to develop my craft with the boys, and I believe in what the club’s offering. Their faith in me is reflected in this contract extension,” Barnett said in a club announcement.

“I appreciate the unity among the younger players; there are 21 or 22 of us under 22, and it’s exciting to progress with this group.

“I haven’t played as much as I’d like. Last year had availability issues, and this year I was set back by a four-week injury. This contract shows their belief in me, even though I haven’t yet shown my best on the track, but I hope to soon.

“Ruck is the hardest position to play, and learning from Ryan Turnbull, Bailey Williams, and now Matt Flynn will really help my development.”

Barnett, drafted with Pick 23 in the 2022 National Draft from West Adelaide, has played two games for the Eagles. He debuted last year against St Kilda as the tactical sub and returned in Round 2 against GWS this year, recording six disposals, eight hitouts, and two tackles before being subbed out.

The 20-year-old has also impressed in the WAFL this year, averaging 7.2 disposals and 19.8 hitouts from six matches at the state league level.
