Cardinals’ Willson Contreras Scheduled to Start Rehab Assignment on Tuesday

St. Louis Cardinals’ Willson Contreras Poised to Begin Rehab AssignmentSt. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol has announced that catcher Willson Contreras is expected to commence a minor league rehab assignment starting Tuesday. Contreras has been sidelined since May 7 after sustaining a left forearm fracture from a swing, which required surgery the following day.

Over the weekend, Contreras participated in several batting practice sessions in St. Louis as part of his recovery process. Marmol noted on Sunday that the exact location for Contreras’ rehab stint had not yet been finalized.

A seasoned three-time All-Star, Contreras has been a significant contributor to the Cardinals this season, boasting a .280 batting average with six home runs and 12 RBIs across 31 games.

In related roster moves, St. Louis placed right-hander Kyle Gibson on the bereavement list ahead of their series finale against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. To fill Gibson’s roster spot, right-hander Ryan Loutos was recalled from Triple-A Memphis.

Gibson’s absence comes after an impressive seven-inning performance in Friday’s 3-0 victory over the Cubs. Marmol expressed confidence that Gibson would return in time for his scheduled start on Wednesday against Miami.

Additionally, Marmol provided an update on infielder-outfielder Tommy Edman, revealing that Edman will continue his rehabilitation at the team’s Florida facility this week. Edman has been sidelined this season due to a right wrist sprain and is progressing towards a return to the active roster.

The Cardinals continue to manage their roster dynamics and rehabilitation efforts as they navigate through the challenges of the season, aiming to strengthen their lineup with the imminent return of key players like Contreras and Edman.
