Carlos Correa Sends Clear Message to Minnesota Twins: Eager to Retire Soon

The Minnesota Twins are scheduled for a doubleheader against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday following Saturday’s rainout. Carlos Correa is expected to start at shortstop for both games, continuing his near-perfect attendance this season except for a brief stint on the injured list in mid-April.

Since returning, Correa has been the standout performer for the Twins, boasting a .298 batting average, an .841 OPS, and a 141 OPS+. Defensively, he has maintained his stellar reputation at shortstop. In 2024 alone, Correa has already accumulated 2.2 WAR and 1.5 WPA (Wins Above Replacement), leading the team in most offensive categories except for those held by Royce Lewis, who has played limited games this season.

This resurgence reflects the expectations the Twins had when they signed Correa to one of their largest contracts. Looking ahead, if Correa continues to excel and young players like Royce Lewis and Brooks Lee develop, the Twins could see significant postseason opportunities in the coming years.

However, beyond the 2028 season, uncertainty looms. According to local insider and former Twins pitcher Charley Walters, Correa intends to retire after completing his current $200 million contract. Despite potential options and vesting clauses in subsequent years, Correa, at 34 years old, plans to prioritize family over extending his career, despite potential opportunities for further accolades and championships.

For now, Correa remains committed to the Twins, appreciating his role as a leader and franchise cornerstone. While his future beyond 2028 remains undecided, his impact on the team and the community is undeniable.
