Bulldogs face another setback as MRC charges utility

The utility, who has been playing at lock forward, was sin-binned for the tackle on Will Penisini in the second half.

Now, he faces a Grade 2 crusher tackle charge from the NRL’s match review committee, which carries a two-match ban with an early guilty plea, or three matches if he contests the charge and loses at the NRL judiciary.

The charge was expected given the nature of the tackle, with some suggesting it could have even warranted a Grade 3 charge, which is the maximum penalty available.

As it’s a first offence for Mann, the penalty is lower than it could have been, despite being a Grade 2 charge.

The sanction is a major blow for the Bulldogs, adding to their woes with Jacob Preston suffering an ankle injury and Josh Curran missing time with a concussion on Monday. Viliame Kikau is also out with a hand injury.

The club’s forward pack will be decimated following the bye when they face the Sydney Roosters in Round 16 on June 22, although there’s a chance Curran could be available for that game if he returns in 11 days.

No other players were charged during the game.
