Yankees Suffer as Red Sox Set Franchise Stolen Base Record

It’s a rare occurrence for the Boston Red Sox, a team established in 1901, to make franchise history.

Yet, they achieved just that on Sunday night against their rivals, the New York Yankees.

During Sunday’s victory over the Yankees, the Red Sox set a team record with nine stolen bases, capitalizing on the weak arm strength of New York catcher Jose Trevino to dominate the base paths.

Trevino has the slowest throw velocity to second base among qualified MLB catchers, which seemed to influence Boston’s aggressive strategy.

In the nationally televised game on ESPN, the Red Sox succeeded in nine out of ten stolen base attempts. Trevino managed to throw out Rob Refsnyder in the fifth inning but otherwise struggled to prevent the thefts.

Shortstop David Hamilton had an outstanding night, stealing four bases in the 9–3 win, raising his season total to 18. Jarren Duran also contributed with two steals, bringing his tally to 17 for the year.

Trevino expressed his frustration at allowing so many stolen bases, acknowledging that he needs to “make better throws and get the ball out.”
