Columbus Invades the Bronx to Snap…

A weather delay cast a gray tone over the game before kickoff. I initially called it a “Delayed win,” a statement that aged poorly by the final whistle. The delay forced both teams to undergo an extra warm-up routine, which some believed might have hindered their momentum. However, Columbus emerged determined to showcase why they are one of the league’s best teams.

From the start, Columbus took the initiative. Their front three had Matt Freese making saves left and right during the first 25 minutes. The connection between Cucho Hernandez, Diego Rossi, and Mohamed Farsi overwhelmed New York City. Freese made crucial saves, demonstrating his all-star game worthiness.

By the 30th minute, New York City settled into the game thanks to good build-up play between Keaton Parks and Santiago Rodriguez. Unfortunately, Rodriguez’s shot hit the crossbar, keeping the score level. This chance boosted New York City’s confidence, but Columbus continued attacking with long passes to break through the defense.

In the 38th minute, Christian Ramirez made a perfect pass, resulting in defender Mitja Ilenic being sent off for a foul that stopped a scoring chance. This red card might have disrupted most teams, but it strangely motivated New York City. Santiago Rodriguez found space to set up Alonso Martinez and Agustin Ojeda, who scored with two key touches. New York City entered halftime down a man but ahead on the scoreboard.

The second half was equally surprising. Columbus quickly scored two goals within five minutes to retake the lead. The equalizer was confusing, with questions about Christian Hernandez’s onside position. The second goal exploited a tactical advantage, with Mohamed Farsi creating a fast counterattack from an unmarked left wing. New York City nearly scored in the 56th minute, but Hannes Wolf missed.

Ironically, Wolf caused a play that led to Columbus’s third goal. A controversial penalty was awarded after VAR ruled that Wolf fouled a Columbus midfielder in the box. Cucho Fernandez converted the penalty in the 65th minute. Despite this setback, New York City attempted a comeback.

Substitute Malachi Jones nearly scored, injecting energy into the team. Youngster Christian McFarlane made his debut, impressing with his skill and touch. Santiago Rodriguez scored in the 85th minute, but it wasn’t enough to equalize. The match showcased two strong teams leaving everything on the field.
